After i took the photo reference for this piece by looking into a shrub in Florida, i thought it would be the type of subject that Georgia O'Keefe would paint.

Hi Jay
Read your Bio, you were an electrical engineer in your other life. Maybe there is hope for me; I am an electrical engineer getting close to retirement. I work at Draper labs in Cambridge Ma. Mostly doing RF, microwave circuit and antenna design/development. I will be 62 this coming August and have to make a decision on what I am going to do. The wife wants me to retire, sell our place in Arlington and make our place in Bristol our primary residence. Do you miss being an engineer?
Anyway, the mad hatter painting has been fun, different than most of the portraits that I have done, lots of color. It needs a lot of work and it is a long way from being completed.
I will try dumping a photo on the critique site and see what happens.

The work you have posted is very impressive, especially the portrait work. The two paintings I submitted are not completed yet, Santa is closer to the end then the other. I only get a chance to paint during the weekends when we go down to Bristol. I am not sure if the technique I am using is correct, I start with a sketch on the canvas (in graphite), then use burnt umber to generate the overall tones for the painting. After letting the painting dry for a week I start adding color, first the darks then the mid tones then the lighter areas. I will repeat this process until I finally get bored with the painting and start another.
How do you submit a painting or drawing to be critique?

Hi Jay
Great site, I was hoping that the critique section of this site could help me improve my drawing and paintings skills. I started drawing in graphite about 3 years ago, and just recently started painting in oils. A friend of mine, who paints quite a bit, suggested that I try painting in oils and extend what I was doing in graphite.
Late in life to start, but my goals are to enjoy and learn, I need a lot of help, as you can see.

I agree with you fully and think that this should be done. Artists need their art shone and if that salonde refuse is it , Thats the way to go . I would help Jan out also. I would think that they would have to hang longer. A week or two, He should get some kind of stipin for that? Or should thae gallery just use it as a gallery space. or give artists the choice if refused to give an extra $5.00 to be hung at Jans.
